Cloisonne Jewelry

This cloisonne jewelry is made with kumihimo braided nylon or satin cord. Perfect for everyday or for that casual or dressy evening out!

We use different types of beads and pendants such as dichroic, colored glass beads, crystal bead, and metal beads to accent the Cloisonne pendant and make your necklace one-of-a-kind especially for YOU!



Originally we had offered macrame cords with the Cloisonne pendants but found that the kumihimo braids are much more attractive than the macrame and can be made round instead of flat.

Kumihimo, Japanese braiding, is a method of braiding silk threads into cords originally used as ties, cording and belts for clothing and closures for Samurai armor. Kumihimo literally means the coming together (kumi) of threads (himo).

Traditionally done on a marudai, a round braiding stool or stand,
usually made with a "donut" of wood and three or four dowels connecting
the donut to a square bottom. The threads are placed across the top of
the marudai, called the mirror, and draped over the edges.

As the threads coming together they form a braid that emerges down
through a hole in the center of the marudai and is weighted to keep
the tension consistant.

Although the braids are generally made of silk we use satin cord or cotton embroidery floss to make cords for our necklaces and bracelets. A portable version of the marudai made of foam was used to braid these cords.
