What is Cloisonne? What is cloisonne? Cloisonne, an ancient metalworking technique, is a multi-step enamel process used to produce jewelry, vases, and other decorative items. The items are formed using metal such as copper, bronze, or silver and is fused together under high temperatures afterwhich the filigree-welding (soldering) is carefully applied. The soldering is done with copper or pure silver wire and is bent into shape using small pliers, tweezers, and custom made jigs. The pattern is glued to the enameled, clear enamel, surface with gum Tragacanth. When the Tragacanth has dried, the item is fired at extremely high temperatures causing the Tragacanth to burn off and the metal to firm up. The enamel coloring comes next. The enamel powders are ground beforehand and made into a glaze. The glaze is then applied 4 or 5 times heating to 800 degrees centigrade in between each glazing. The surface is then polished 3 times with grit or charcoal to produce a high lustre and a smooth surface. It is then placed in liquid gold or silver; this gilds the exposed parts of metal and prevents corrosion. Watch the following video for a visual explanation of the cloisonne technique.
