Wire Wrapped Jewelry

Most all jewelry is made with some wire: every chain link, pierced earring posts and hooks. Every brooch has a pin on the back and we all know what it's made of. It can be used to make necklaces, bracelets and rings or to create jewelry components such as jump rings and clasps.

Designs can be simple to elegant and everything in between. It can be bent, twisted, coiled, hammered, soldered and can even be painted. It is made with either a base metal; such as copper, nickel, brass, aluminum. It can also be made of a precious metal, such as sterling silver and gold filled. Gold filled is more durable that gold plated. Gold filled has 100 times more gold in it than gold plated. Gold plated tends to scratch easily.

Wire comes in round, half round, and square shapes. Round is most commonly used. Square is used for projects such as wrapping a cabochon or it can be twisted to create a filigree effect. Half round is used mostly to bind round or square wire together in flat bundles.

It comes in three different hardnesses: dead soft, half hard, and full hard. I prefer dead soft. It is easier to manipulate. The following items were made with dead soft anti-tarnish argentium or gold-filled.
