Tips on How to Keep Your Jewelry Looking Like New
The Easy and Inexpensive Way
First of all, to me this is the most important tip and applies to all your jewelry, handcrafted or not.
Do not wear your jewelry while washing dishes, showering, bathing, washing the car, or swimming. Salt water, chlorine, perspiration, soaps, detergents or any harsh cleansers may damage soft stones, pearls and discolor or pit some metals.
Do not put on your jewelry until after your hairspray, perfume, and skincare products have dried and after you have finished applying your makeup.
Direct sunlight can damage semi-precious stones, sterling silver, crystals, pearls, and dyed stones.
Tarnish
Exposure to air and moisture causes tarnishing. If your jewelry is made with any metal, except gold or platinum, it will eventually tarnish. To prevent tarnishing keep your jewelry in an airtight cool dry place with anti-tarnish strips. Do not use anti-tarnish strips with storing pearls; they may discolor the pearls.
I prefer to store my jewelry individually in a zip lock bag. Make sure the item is completely dry before placing it in the bag.
Polishing
Polishing with jewelry polishing cloths are a good way to prevent tarnish. Some polishing cloths come with jeweler’s rouge already in the cloth.

Other polishing cloths require you apply the jeweler’s rouge yourself.
Polishing cloth for jewelry
Rub down the entire item. Be careful not to touch anything with the cloth but the jewelry piece as the rouge may transfer to your hands or clothing.
Using a clean polishing cloth, without rouge, gently buff the piece to a shine. Try not to touch the item with your hands. Hold by the bail or chain to avoid fingerprints.
Two Simple Jewelry Cleaning Solutions
Two of the best jewelry cleaners are in your kitchen or your bathroom:
Soap and water. Use a gentle soap like Dawn. It is safe on most gemstones, pearls, and polymer clay.
Toothpaste and water. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste (without baking soda).
Best Cleaning Tools
The best cleaning tools are a soft toothbrush (the kind recommended for sensitive teeth), paintbrush, Q-Tips, and a polishing cloth.
Cleaning Process
Be sure to cover the drain with a kitchen towel.
Rub soap or toothpaste on item with your fingers or with a paintbrush.
Clean under running warm water.
Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry with a paper towel or snag free cloth.
Allow jewelry to dry completely before buffing with a clean polishing cloth(without rouge).
To clean copper or brass brush the surface with white vinegar and rinse with water. Dry with a towel or hair dryer on cool setting.
An ionic cleaner can also be used to clean delicate items such as pearls, gemstones, shell, glass or polymer clay.
